IMPACT OFFICER GUIDES - TREASURER



Congratulations! You have been elected chapter treasurer. The responsibilities assigned to the treasurer are much greater than simply collecting dues and keeping a checkbook. Please read through this guide and pick out those portions that apply to your position, as defined by your chapter’s constitution and bylaws.

Regardless of how your chapter has outlined your responsibilities, it is important to remember that the treasurer is a key leadership position. You must work closely with all other chapter officers to insure the smooth operation of your chapter. An effective treasurer makes chapter administration easier, plays an important role in communications, and helps preserve the financial stability of the chapter. By doing your job well, you will contribute to the chapter’s success and sharpen your leadership skills.

No publication can provide all of the answers to the challenges you will encounter during your term of office. We won’t even attempt to do so in this guide. Instead, we are providing some guideposts as you plan your term of office. This guide should give you a better understanding of your role as the chapter’s treasurer.

As treasurer, you have been elected to one of the most responsible positions available in your chapter. Without funds, very few chapters can operate effectively. As treasurer, you are responsible for these funds — the collection, use and adequate accounting of funds during your term.

Sample forms and examples have been provided to help you carry out the duties of the treasurer.

Although the examples may seem complicated, remember that it is much better to take a little more time keeping complete and accurate records in the first place than it is to attempt to reconstruct what happened at a later time. Brothers with formal training in accounting or experience in business will recognize that the suggested procedures are somewhat simplified compared to usual commercial accounting practices. While use of more sophisticated accounting may have advantages for your chapter, keep in mind that future treasurers may not have the benefit of the same knowledge and experience.

Finally, it is important that you take advantage of your experience as treasurer to increase your knowledge of the chapter’s operations. As treasurer, you will have an opportunity to learn something about almost every aspect of the chapter. Seize this opportunity and combine it with your service as a member of the chapter’s Executive Committee to sharpen your leadership skills.

You will find that we have not attempted to provide you with an answer to every question, problem, or crisis that may arise during your tenure. Instead, we hope the guidance provided will enable you to make proactive decisions that will provide positive experiences and support for your chapter's programs. Remember, one of the best support systems an officer can have is interaction with the previous officer and transference of information.
