APO IMPACT OFFICER GUIDE - PRESIDENT



  • Every chapter of Alpha Phi Omega elects a president.
  • Every chapter president is expected to preside at meetings.
  • But what else should a president do?

The answer varies from chapter to chapter. The environment in which your chapter functions will have a tremendous impact on your role as president. The size, structure and leadership needs of your chapter also will affect your role as chapter president.

No publication can provide all of the answers to your questions. Instead, this guide will provide you with helpful details to refer to as you plan your office term. This guide also will give you a better understanding of your role as chapter president.

As president, you will serve as the leader for the Executive Committee in achieving its goals. Remember, it is not your function as chapter president to direct or “run” the chapter. Rather, you can best serve the chapter by creating and maintaining an environment in which the leadership skills of your fellow chapter officers, brothers and pledges are developed and utilized.

During your term as president, it is recommended that you create a supplement to this guide to assist the future presidents of your chapter. The following information should be included:
  • Chapter Bylaws
  • Contact information for the current section chair, region director and advisory chair
  • General procedures for reserving meeting/office space on campus, including contact information
  • Procedure to register as a student group on campus
  • Guidelines for monetary procedures, such as bank account management
  • Information to assist in advertising on campus
  • Schedule of general events throughout the school year
  • Same Page booklet

Throughout your service as chapter president, remember that you are not alone. You have chapter advisors, a section chair, and staff who are willing and able to assist you. Utilize their talents and experiences. The only dumb question is the one UNASKED.

CONCLUSION

It should be clear by now that we have not attempted to provide you with an answer to every question, problem, or crisis. Your chapter believed enough in your leadership ability to elect you its president. In order to be effective, you must share that confidence.

We have suggested approaches you can take and noted resources available to you. In addition, you should take advantage of the next opportunity you have to participate in APO IMPACT Live for presidents. This, as well as other APO IMPACT Live courses, are designed to give you “hands-on” experience in dealing with various situations before you confront them in real situations. You will find that we have not attempted to provide you with an answer to every question, problem, or crisis that may arise during your tenure. Instead, we hope the guidance provided will enable you to make proactive decisions that will provide positive experiences and support for your chapter's alumni program. Remember, one of the best supports any officer can have is interaction with the previous officer and transference of information. If you feel that you have learned something in your position which could help many other officers in the Fraternity, please send your suggestions to leadership.director@apo.org so this manual can remain fresh and relevant


Finally, remember that when your office term is complete, your responsibility to the chapter does not end. You will have learned a great deal about what the chapter expects from its president and what the chapter needs. When you plan your officer transition retreat, share this information with your successor. Make sure he/she knows you will be around and willing to help.
